Desert

Formerly unreachable due to its location below sea-level, Siwa is the great oasis of the West. In the past, Cleopatra came here to bathe in the waters and Alexander the Great came to see the Oracle of Amun. However, once ancient Egypt disappeared, Siwa was forgotten. Set away from all roads, this green setting and its 1000 springs were only rediscovered during the 2nd World War.

In our 4x4s, on a level with the turquoise waters of Marsa Matruh, we travel southwards through the desert towards Siwa and Bahareya, the oasis of sleeping civilisation. We leave the tarmac roads for sandy paths, where we discover peaceful bivouac camps under starry skies, in the complete silence of the infinite sea of sand that surrounds us. Our next stop is Cairo, where we visit the Giza plateau, Cairo museum, the Citadel and finally the Souk of Khan el Khalili to haggle over the many goods on offer!
