An Undiscovered Region
This is a magnificent trek in the ancient independent kingdom of Lo and it is suitable for beginners because the altitude does not exceed 4,000m and the altitude differences are 500m at most. Situated in a remote region in north-east Nepal, Mu-Tang, or "the fertile plain", has long been forgotten by the central government. In the past caravans used it as a route between Nepal and Tibet. This ancient kingdom of three small towns and 30 villages only became part of Nepal in 1951 and it remains very independent due to its detached location and the fact that foreigners were only allowed in after 1996. There are still some regions in this program which are virtually undiscovered by trekkers.
A Journey into the Past
During this trek, we discover chortens, inaccessible dwellings, fluttering prayer flags, and unbelievable cliff faces that are sometimes painted orange. You will visit the Kingdom’s capital: Lo Manthang, with its high surrounding walls. It is a market town with small streets that are crossed by horse and mule-led caravans, and with roads that lead to the far-away snowy summits at the Tibetan frontiers. This trek invites you on a journey into the past, with 3 days of sightseeing in Katmandu included to discover this beautiful city.
